Lynx FAQ

Q

How do I actually use Lynx ?

A

You use it typically as an accompaniment to editing; it docks to one side or floats over the top of your editor, and you use it to navigate to code, run compilers and access Help files as you work. It co-exists with your editor.

Q

Do I need to have PowerBASIC on my PC in order to use Lynx ?

A

No, you just won't be able to command the PowerBASIC compiler or resource compiler from Lynx, that's all.

Q

Do I have to have my editor open ?

A

No, not at all. It's just that you normally will have.

Q

Where is the best place to park the Lynx window ?

A

Fundamentally it can sit in one of 3 places

left of the editor window

right of the editor window

floating over the editor window

In the last case, you'll probably find it most comfortable on the right, since that's where there will be most whitespace (less to obscure). In addition, you may want to enable the auto-rollup feature, so that Lynx will roll itself up to become just a floating title bar when not being used. So by exercising

choice of position

use of auto-rollup

setting Lynx to be topmost / non-topmost

- you have considerable control over how you make Lynx work for you. At the end of the day it is an addition to your workspace, but hopefully you will find it a worthwhile addition.

Q

What versions of PowerBASIC does Lynx support ?

A

Lynx works with PB/DLL 6.x, PB/Win 7.x, PB/Win 8.x, PB/CC 2.x, PB/CC 3.x and PB/CC 4.x. Code written for earlier versions of PowerBASIC compilers is likely to parse the same, but has not been tested against.

Q

What editors does Lynx work with ?

A

Lynx works with JellyFish Pro, UltraEdit, TextPad, SED, Programmer's File Editor (available as a free download on our downloads page) and also with the IDEs/editors that ship with PowerBASIC compilers. It should also work fine with any 3rd party editor that can :

accept a command line to open a file at a specified line

be configured to run only a single instance of itself at any one time

Note that Lynx works purely with your files when parsing source code.

Q

Does Lynx use the Registry, or put files in my System folder ?

A

No ! It does read the Registry though, to look up the paths for your editors and your PowerBASIC compiler(s). This is purely to save you having to enter this information manually, when setting up.

Q

What Operating Systems does Lynx run on ?

A

Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000 / XP
